About Dr. Newman

Dr. Newman received his BA from Haverford College and MD-PhD from the University of Virginia. He trained in Internal Medicine at Brown University and Neurology back at UVa. He is Board Certified in Neurology, Vascular Neurology and Neurocritical Care.

During his 44 year career, Dr. Newman rose to Professor of Neurology at SUNY Stony Brook (SUSB), the University of Wisconsin (UW) and Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, as well as Professor of Radiology at SUSB. He practiced at the SUSB and UW University Hospitals, and the Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia.

Dr. Newman has received over two dozen teaching awards from the several medical schools and related hospitals. During his career, Dr. Newman helped train over 200 Neurology residents, thousands of medical students and thousands of residents from other specialties. He also has been heavily involved in training nurses and virtually every other allied health profession. He mentored several Ph.D. theses. He was the “test pilot” teacher for the Evidence Based Medicine curriculum for residents created by the American Academy of Neurology.

Dr. Newman has over 50 research publications in peer-reviewed journals. His primary research activity pertained to glucose utilization, diffusion and cerebral blood flow in experimental models of ischemia, theoretical models of normal brain function and the very early application to advanced imaging to stroke patients, including diffusion MRI, perfusion MRI and perfusion CT.

His administrative roles included Residency Director four times, Stroke Director at the three hospitals, Chief of Staff at the Northport VAMC, and Chair of Neurosensory Sciences at Einstein.

He has been a member of the AAN, ANA, ASA, Neurocritical Care Society, Society for Neuroscience, and Society of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism.

Dr. Newman is now retired from patient care but remains intensely committed to the education of medical students and residents. His hobbies include photography, drawing, cooking and playing banjo, as well as studying Spanish and French,. He has recently published his first book "Advice for Young Doctors" and will soon publish a dual-language (Spanish-English) children’s book "Hu’on y Avocet," illustrated by his wife Sally.
